Our Leading Record of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Claims the Number One Spot.

Initially, Lux may look more like a difficult scholarly challenge rather than a new pop record by a musician whose last hit was a collaboration with a global pop star. Split into four separate sections and voiced in thirteen languages, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged work investigating feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and corporal change, frequently through the lens of various saintly figures. The dissolution of a romance—a topic treated with grounded honesty elsewhere—is launched heavenward on this record, buoyed by the lush presence of a major symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast list of contributors. Its sheer ambition by itself renders the work of other artists seem quite modest.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That Lux manages to escape overly academic posturing feels almost a miracle, with sole praise going to Rosalía. Although it's not her first album to fuse historical sounds and the present, its scale are far higher here, with the balancing act far more dramatic. What really raises this fourth album, beyond its complex melodies, dense compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of playfulness. Similar to the iconic Björk during her height, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. When she is breaking your heart in two, you still desire to stay alongside her for the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

That playful energy shines clearly during the stunning Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool over several moments. Then, all the music drops silent, and we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo thuds in like comedic force. The song immediately shifts into the frenetic single driven by racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a cameo appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic with this album is that the listener never quite know—or even wish to predict—what it will go to next."

Nearly every song ends at a completely different point than where it started. A track explores the fleeting trappings of fame with a featherlight symphony before disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls her previous rhythmic work begins off moody and brooding, featuring prowling beats, until fluttering flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir enter to smooth the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Accessibility

A key balancing act on the album is navigating the gap of radical innovation and broad accessibility. It is little surprise that the album has become her first work to break into the Top 5 of major charts: at its core a suite of truly catchy pop songs. One track performed entirely in English swells around a chorus that seems to collect increasingly infectious hooks as it spins skyward. This trick is echoed on a different expansive ballad that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces with its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting an ex- lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing carry a painted-on smile, like a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious reach for high artistry amid of looming artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption for glorious transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its own built-in excess. This is a deep well of hidden treasure that requires patience to fully mine but doesn't feels like hard work. While other major releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, Lux is a sumptuous feast at which the characters at the table, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flutter between conversations about ancient saints, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about useless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's truly endlessly creative practitioner.
